rock the bells
This past Sunday, I got my bells rocked. Simple as that. Once inside the venue, there was a pink flyer saying that Common wasn't going to be performing due to some unexpected conflict, or some shit. Womp! I've seen 'em a few years ago, but it would've been nice to see him again. Anyway, we killed some time, walking around the venue, getting our drinking-bracelets & pickin' up swag. I got my hands on a Rock the Bells tee, duh, as well as a Dilla shirt. My friend Patrick went all out like a girl & bought an entire wardrobe from all the vendors there; better thank him for those dollas you made. Meanwhile, it was hot as hell! I'm so sinserious. I was having such a great hair-day & it all ended when the sun started beaming on my already-brown-ass.
The first set we caught was Tech N9ne; the dude is a dope emcee & has a great stage presence, but I'm still not a fan. His shit doesn't move me. However, acts that did were: Slick Rick (who was a surprise appearance!), Reflection Eternal (also known as Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek), The Roots, Raekwon, Big Boi (from Outkast), Nas, Damian Marley, & of course, good ol' Slum Village. I was a bit bummed that I missed Ice-Cube & Busta Rhymes, but their sets conflicted with Raekwon & Slum Village, who were on a side stage? Wtf. But, anyway. The only disappointing act I saw was fkn House of Pain. You know, those guys that do that "Jump Around" song? Total garbage. I remember tweeting: Who the fk is this on stage? Get me outta here with yr weak ass beats & rhymes. Can't even understand wtf you're sayin. Real talk.
I swear, I was on cloud nine during their entire set. Reppin' the SV -- RIP Dilla & Baatin.
The legendary, Slick Rick.
Raekwon ripped it.
Reflection Eternal; this was mad refreshing to see.
Like I mentioned, the only reason why I even bought a ticket to this year's Rock the Bells was for Slum Village. Although it was bittersweet seeing only Elzhi & T3, they put on a great show & I'm glad I was able to witness it. I swear, someone in the crowd said they had already gone on (the set-times were all whacked) & it was as if I had just had my heartbroken. I'm not even playing. I wanted to deck the guy that said that cos he nearly made me cry. But then I saw Hi-Tek get on stage & I remembered he was DJ'ing for SV. Total relief.
So, uploading/resizing all the photos was quite the hassle. If you'd like, check 'em out; they're all up on flickr.
